HAPPY DRESS UP DAY!

I'm Going to be Dean Venture. No Joke. Mainly because I already have a red sweater vest on hand. And because I want acne-ridden girls to tattoo me on their backs.

Here's something to add a little enjoyment to your Halloween. It's not perfectly executed, but the intro is classy to say the least.

Cheeckyboy - This Is Halloween (Danny Elfman vs. Petey Pablo and others)

Hey remember that time on So You Think You Can Dance? with the zombie dance? So perfect.

Roisin Murphy - Ramalama (Bang Bang)

MONKEY BEE... WHAT???

So the minds behind the Gorillaz got together, wrote an opera in mandarin, and then created this bit of ridiculousness concerning that same opera. It really might be the strangest thing I have ever seen. It get's more and more intense as it goes on, so watch all three minutes of it. In fact, If I saw someone doing a video mashup set, I would be pumped to see this one. But I think that when it's all said and done, I prefer my animated Gorillaz.

MY FAITH IN INDIE IS RESTORED (VIA MOTHER MOTHER)

^Most pretentious blog heading ever? Sure why not.

While working the airwaves at 91.1 we are forced to play a certain amount of rotation songs (songs that labels demand that we play). I guess this is what keeps the scene alive

70% of the songs suck, but lately we've been getting some nice tracks. More than nice even.

Mother Mother - Hayloft

I could hardly keep myself from bouncing off my swivel chair while listening to this one

If you like the music on Nashville Nights, check out Adventure Time, Wed. at 11pm.

As promised, my next post will have 20 bday songs...be ready

MASHUPS

Hey, did you know about the rest of the mashup world? Sure, it isn't the fount of creativity that bloghouse and indie pop can be, but that doesn't mean it isn't a lot of fun. Unfortunately, independent mashups are a dime a dozen, so I thought I might hook you up with some of my favorites and save you the time and effort of weeding through the seas of hairbrained metaphorical car wrecks they call mashups and point you towards some of the a-list tracks.

Kissy Sell Out did this crazy Missy vs. Nickel Creek mashup. It sounds like it would never work, but it works oh so well. Just give it a try.

Kissy Sell Out - You're On Fire

Immuzikation tends to use several songs at once. In fact, I don't think I have ever seen a simple A vs. B track from him. Here are two of my personal favs

Immuzikation - Fish Tacos (Coldplay, Cut Copy, Blow, M.I.A., Weezer? etc.)

Immuzikation - We're Gonna Have A Party (Ratatat, Youngbloodz, Kid Sis, The Decemberists, etc.)

The Hood Internet may be the best thing to happen to mashups in a while. Go download all of their mixtapes. In fact, I'll be reviewing their most recent mixtape in a day or so, but I can already tell it's gonna be thumbs up. Here's my favorite track off of their Mixtape Volume Two.

The Hood Internet - Crank Dat Pogo

We posted The Soundtrack To Your Hipster Life as mixed by T.H.O.M.A.S a while back, and it's worth listening to (I've played it out) so I'll see if I can't get a link up soon for that. But T.H.O.M.A.S. has an M.I.A. vs. Calvin Harris mashup that will just steal your heart. I can't listen to Acceptable in the 80's without adding in my recontextualized M.I.A. interjections.

T.H.O.M.A.S. - Fun For The People

And finally, some of my own handiwork. This track is a gateway drug to the world of mashups for your pop friends. Have you ever shown someone a mashup and they didn't know either of the songs, so it didn't have quite the same effect? Problem solved.

Jolson - Sexy, I'm Leavin'

NEW OIZO!

Sick of the chromeo TF remix yet? Need more disco?

Mr. Oizo - Two Takes It (ft. Carmen Castro)

95% of Oizo's songs consist of one riff repeated 400 times with little variations and small add ons but this track is very engaging. You will rack up some play counts with this one.

stay tuned for the 20song bday post coming up next week. It's gonna be OUTAKIIINSAAAANE

NEWish CHROMEO AND BAG RAIDERS

It's been about seven years since discodust posted anything new. If you're like me you never want to look at that same Metronomy + CSS + Dope Fiends post again. Anyways I janked this song from their latest post and I have to say I'm really psyched. This track is so d0pe, nasty, bananazzz

Treasure Fingers - Cross the Dancefloor (Chromeo Remix)

In other news, Bag Raiders are releasing a new E.P. fairly soon. In anticipation of that fact I threw together a quick mash between Chromeo's Call Me Up (my fav on that album) and the instrumental Bag Raiders track called Shooting Stars.

Chromeo vs. Bag Raiders - Chrome Raiders (JT's Mysterious Producer Mix)
spread this around like sweet sweet co co butter .

Here's the orig which i janked from HRO (janked has been said too many times now it's not cool any more don't ever say it) which he janked from some other site

Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars (Instrumental)

You should read HRO and Discodust every day.

MORE STRAWBERRY JAM?

Animal Collective released an EP a while back, and truth be told, I get pretty grumpy about EPs. All too often, an EP seems to come off as an amalgam of unrelated b-sides and not-good-enough-for-an-album singles. The record stores want $12 for four or five songs, and too often only one or two of them are worth hearing.

But every once in a while, a band releases an EP almost as a continuation of their most recent album (see Of Montreal's Icons, Abstract Thee), and that gets me excited.

I'm sorry to say that I can't offer this EP that sort of praise. This one definitely falls into the category of potpourri EPs. It lacks the energy that brought Strawberry Jam to life.

But just because it falls short of Stawberryesque expectations doesn't mean it isn't good. It is Animal Collective after all.

Here's my favorite from the EP.

Animal Collective - Water Curses

POST WAR YEARS

Well we've had a fun/frantic/stressful run here at NN trying to pick up the pieces after our brief stint on Hypem. I'm not going to pretend like it wasn't all Vampire Weekends doing. It was. Thank you VW and all those who got the track.

During the "Ottoman" explosion of 2008, several tracks were submitted to the NN. One that stood out was "False Starts" by Post War Years. I could imagine PWY being displayed in the "Listeners Also Bought..." column after looking up Foals yet after a few listens you will start to notice a some key differences.

First off, Post War Years don't cram their "brih-ish" accents down your throat (see: Bloc Party, Foals, Hadouken!). The music is interesting and danceable and just when you think you know where its headed, the chorus hits you with a blast of horns, its great check it out.

Post War Years - False Starts (DEMO) (alt. link)
Look for them on tour with White Lies, PWY album drops sometime spring of 2009. Send them some myspace love.

Cheers.

HIPSTER DINO-DOLPHIN RELAYS

Tower Records in Shinjuku always surrounds the new releases with legends of the genre, so Daniel Powter's new CD was next to a load of American radio poo. I found Friendly Fires amidst a sea of blogaholic gold, and promptly returned home to investigate.

I found a solid album, but scope this video! I doubt there has ever been a more blatant display of jubliant hipster foolisness, and I love it so much.

Here's the song, but the album is already out (I know, I know, how tacky for a blog to post on an album that's publicly available), so drop by Best Buy, pronto!

Friendly Fires - On Board

Friendly Fires - Jump In The Pool

MGMT + HOLY GHOST

Remember that free itunes single a while back by Holy Ghost called "Hold On" Yes/No/Maybe? No one that I talked to really liked it except me. Then I heard the song In digitalism's Tabloid mix mashing up against some Hercules and Love affair song. Does anyone know the name of that HALA song?

Anyways, a lot of bands/remixers are being referred to as "disco"; an overused and often mislabled description of any artist who uses a drum-snare-cowbell combo. If I had to choose an artist who embodies disco I'd probably say the rapture or even some of Montreal's latest work (Id Engager specifically).

As much as I would love to let MGMT take a break from the blog charts I can't get away from this new remix. Holy Ghost does a great job of capturing disco in this one:

MGMT - Of Moons, Birds and Monsters (Holy Ghost! RMX)

Who's disco to you? Its not really their fault but are you sick of MGMT yet?

FLY GOLDEN EAGLE (AKA MY FAV NASH. ACT)

I was asked in an email to write more on emerging artists out of the city that this blog is built on so here it goes:

Fly Golden Eagle, a Nashville native, released a digital copy of his cd "The State of the Industry" sometime earlier this year. In a land drenched with indie/folk/southern rock it's refreshing to hear a solid danceable album come out of this city.

FGE's driving vocals will stand out from what you normally hear in an electro ditty. Pair this with the fact that he plays every instrument (many of the songs are guitar driven) and you have a very solid mix. Check out the full album here

Fly Golden Eagle - Shiny Golden Pinky Ring

Send FGE some myspace love and stay tuned for more FGE action in the future.

P.S. I was told in the same email that Nashville is the new Austin...what do you think about this?
